Orwell’s great classic, and The Wizard of Oz found in songs?
You all have seen The Wizard of Oz, and read George Orwell’s, 1984. And all of you know that the Wizard of Oz goes from Black and Whit to color, when Dorothy is struck on the head during a tornado in Kansas. But have you ever heard Breaking Benjamin’s song “Home” ? If one meerly reads through the lyrics, one will realize that this classic film is told in a rock song. Did Breaking Benjamin really write a song about a film. Is this an attempt at a film overveiw. Decide for yourself.
Now on to Orwells, novel, 1984. Yet another rock bacnd, Atreyu, has a song rerlating to another great classic, 1984. “Can’t Happen Here”, is a war song starting out witha a baby crying in the background as “bullets flood the sky”. Is this a song about a novel, or is this a song about a war (perhaps one of the many here in the United States)? Orwells’, classic novel is about a distopian society where “Big Brother is watching you!” “Can’t Happen Here” says, “”We’re erased and betrayed by mistakes”. In 1984, citiznes of Ocenia, are “erased and betrayed by mistakes”, in that the Ministry of Truth (or the Ministry of Lies), re-writes history and articles, even blogs! So that no one may ever get any ideas to rebel against Big Brother. Those who do are caught by the “Thought Police”, captured and locked up, then tortured until they are “erased” essentially, by the ministry of love, and the ministry of truth.”They are betrayed by everyone around them, and everything. If they so much as dare to remember something that “can’t happen” or “never happened” someone turns them in. Another point is made when this song says, “taking away the pain of thinking for ourselves”, that line can most likely directly realte to Newspeak and how no one is suppossed to think for themselves. Big Brother does all of the thinking for the citizens of Ocenia. Is this double plus plus good?
Have songwriters finally run out of ideas?
